The U. P. Chapter of the Anatomical Society of India (State Branch) was inaugurated and established on Saturday, the 11th November, 1978 at 10 a.m. at King George's Medical College, Lucknow. Earlier, in December 1976 at the Silver Jubilee Conference of the A.S.I., the rules for establishment of state branch or chapters were framed by the executive committee of the A.S.I. and formally accepted by its General Body on the initiative taken by the Medical College of Tamil Nadu. The U.P. Chapter thus became only the second state branch of the A.S.I.to take birth.

The inaugural issue of the Journal of Anatomical Sciences was published in September 1979 as the official media of the U.P. Chapter of the A.S.I. This marked a landmark in the progress of anatomical studies and researches in the state of U.P. The editorial board of the inaugural issue was headed by Dr. S P. Tewari (GSVM Medical College, Kanpur) with Dr. Vishram Singh (GSVM Medical College, Kanpur) as the co-editor. The first issue consisted of four high quality original research articles along with the proceedings of the U. P. Chapter's first annual conference.

The Journal of Anatomical Sciences has since been published in 27 volumes with a plethora of reputed academicians taking up the responsibility of being the editor from time to time. Indexed in several reputed databases in its current form, the journal is published bi-annually and publishes - 1. Full length papers, 2. Brief communications including case reports, 3. Review articles, 4. Book reviews and 5. Scientific proceedings of U.P Chapter of the Anatomical Society of India. The full length papers and brief communications report original researches in the fields of Anatomy, including Gross Anatomy, Comparative Anatomy, Embryology, Histology, Histochemistry, Cytogenetics, Radiological Anatomy, and Allied Clinical Medicine.
